There are many different ways that I can start and maintain professional contacts/relationships throughout my academic career. Depending on whether the individual is a professor, guest speaker, supervisor or dean there are many things I can do to start/maintain a relationship with them. At the same time, the type of relationship may be different but ways to maintain those relationships may remain the same.

Professors/Instructors/TAs

  • Email and get to know them before the semester starts
  • Meet with instructors after class
  • Utilize office hours other than just for getting help
  • Keep in contact after the semester by email or by visiting office

Guest Speakers

  • Get their contact information
  • Engage in conversation with them after class
  • Keep in contact with them via email
  • Pay visits (if possible)

Supervisors

  • Engage in somewhat of a personal relationship
  • Keep positive relationship
  • Maintain relationship and stay in contact after employment

Deans

  • Meet them before/while you’re enrolled
  • Start/Maintain a positive relationship

There are certain objectives that I must fulfill before the end of this project. Some objectives include improving customer service skills, organization skills and management skills. These skills aren’t exclusive to the IT field but they can be vital.

I seem to gain improvements upon my customer service skills by having to interact with merchants and dealers from where I purchase or get more information about the something I am about to purchase. For example speaking correct English, LISTENING keenly and other small things like spelling out unfamiliar words/emails and initiating conversations.

Improving upon my organizational skills has to deal with how I keep up with certain articles (such as different forms & papers) and how I plan out certain events. For instance when I set up times to meet with people to show us a demo of products, I have to make sure that most of the people in the IT department have clear schedules before I decide to schedule an event/function.

Also you could say this is where my management skills come in to factor. An example would be when the representative arrives I should have proper places for them to set up and proper technology already in place so that the demonstrating process goes well as we both intend it to.

In conclusion, these several goals and objectives that I must fulfill as I say may not be exclusive to the IT field but there are extremely vital and should be something that every IT student learns before being exposed to the “Real World”. By being exposed to it first relieves the level of stress for the entering employee and this could possibly eliminate training in these areas.

For my summer project of being assistant project manager at the Gadsden County Board of County Commissioners, there are some legal agreements being put in place to protect us both.

As IT and project manager there are times where I have access to passwords, employee credentials, emails and secure information about the business. This information is not to be revealed or spoken of outside of the business or to someone in the business of none superiority.

My project is to develop a technology based conference room for the Gadsden County Board of County Commissioners. My primary role is to serve as the supervisor/assistant project manager.

The project manager and the commissioners requested that more up-to-date technology be implemented into the conference room to enable them during on-site meetings to have access to technological capabilities such accessing the internet and using multi-media presentations. The manager and the IT department discussed future possibilities and technologies that would be useful to put in a conference room. By the end of our briefing we decided that the room needed technologies along the lines of a wireless network, LCD projectors, LCD Screens, Smart Boards, Voice/Audio System, network printing and possibly phone conferencing and video recording.

My next task was to find a company with the necessary products that would be able to suit our needs. I searched online for the necessary products and found a local company with the products that were needed. I contacted the company (AVI-SPL) via phone and email and contacted a representative (Chris De Treville). Chris emailed me a visual photo and brief description of all the products along with quotes. I gave the quote to the project manager for him to take a look at the pricing.

We scheduled for Chris to come out and show us a demo of some of the requested products.  While he was there we actually got a chance to demo the products and he pointed out a few key features. Our next step would be to meet with Chris to find out exactly what we need to purchase based on the exact dimensions of the conference room in which the products would be put to use.
